The phone broadcasts large amounts of RF energy (radiofrequency) to locate the base station tower, so copious amounts of radiation are cast off in all directions, not harming you, but everyone around you. The manner in which these phones randomly release radiation also manages to rapidly decrease your battery cell, this is why cell phones drain much more energy when they are calling or texting. Many people think that phones grow hot during use because the elecrticity flickering around inside heats the circuits, however this is not the case. The Radiofrequency radiation given off by the phone creates a effect that causes cells in a close vicinity to grow hot, and eventually burst.
