Are cell phones hurting us more than they're helping us?

This graph shows levels of radiation and how much radiation is required for certain tissue damage. Most cell phones cannot release anywhere near this much radiation, but over an extended period of exposure, the tissue cells would be weakened to the point where a much lower level of radiation could cause the same effects as much higher levels of radiation.

This image is a simulation of exactly how cell phones broadcast to their service towers. The phone broadcasts large amounts of RF energy (radiofrequency) to locate the base station tower, so copious amounts of radiation are cast off in all directions, not harming you, but everyone around you. The manner in which these phones randomly release radiation also manages to rapidly decrease your battery cell, this is why cell phones drain much more energy when they are calling or texting. Many people think that phones grow hot during use because the elecrticity flickering around inside heats the circuits, however this is not the case. The Radiofrequency radiation given off by the phone creates a effect that causes cells in a close vicinity to grow hot, and eventually burst.

2nd quote and paraphrase- calling while driving
"The results [of a western australia research program on cell phone usage while driving] showed that drivers' use of a cell phone within a period up to 10 minutes before the time of the crash was associated with a fourfold greater risk of crashing. The risk associated with using a handheld cell phone was only slightly higher than the risk associated with using a hands-free device (4.9 vs. 3.8 times increased risk). This increase in crash risk associated with cell phone use was found regardless of the sex or age of the driver."
In a Australian study of roughly 460 people, ages 17 and up, it was found that after about ten minutes of cell phone conversation/usage, the subjects' chances of getting into a serious automobile accident had gone up four times the average. However, contrary to popular belief, Hands free devices did not reduce that risk significantly (from 4.9 times average to 3.8 times with hands free).
[Studies have shown that the behavior that increases your risk of getting into an accident stem from your state of mind and distraction while talking to someone. For example, when speaking to someone over the phone, you are trying to focus on the conversation, so your observational skills and your reaction time are both cut quite significantly.]

Quote, paraphrase and citation
"Mobile phones can take as little as ten minutes to trigger changes in the brain associated with cancer, scientists claimed yesterday. They found even low levels of radiation from handsets interfere with the way brain cells divide. It is this type of cell division interference that encourages the growth of tumors."
This quote, written and posted by Lee Altenburg M.D, explains that certain scientists, during a research program, discovered that-- in certain research subjects-- just 10 minutes on an average cell phone can trigger a mutation in certain brain cells that can cause a tumor, cyst, or even cancer.

This is a picture of a healthy rat's brain, and then an image of the rat brain after 2 hours exposure to a basic off-the-shelf cell phone. The picture shows multiple lesions where blood vessels in the brain had burst, causing sizable clots. Now you must take into account that the brain of a rat is much weaker in comparison to a human's, and the radiation is much stronger in proportion to their size, but the point stands. Even though it may not happen as fast, the same result will occur in a human example after a longer period of time. This effect of radiation can cause several mental disorders, as well as early onset for complications that may occur naturally such as Alzheimer's, Dementia, or Parkinson's disease.

links and preliminary sources for the dangers of cell phones
http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/cellphones
This is a government funded site that talks about the research of radiation and cancer risks associated with cell phones. The source goes into great detail about how cell phones release radiation and how much of it is released, as well as saying how much of this radiation wold be harmful. I believe this site to be very credible, mostly because it has been authorized by the government, and their researchers.

This is a website based on the concept of 'extending your life expectancy,' and goes into detail about all of the details of radiation in our every day lives, and even points out some secondary sources of similar radiation given off by other simple household devices.
http://www.drbenkim.com/cell-phone-dangers
This is a web page about a certain health scientist's research about the more acute health risks of prolonged exposure to Radio Frequency Radiation from more powerful sources like industrial antennae, satellite dishes, etc. The document also cites multiple other articles of information that have to do with the discussion and congressional decisions regarding radio frequency radiation.

This is another student's essay on the same subject, outlining almost all of my arguments and basically agreeing with my every intention for this project. He goes into detail about certain matters that I have not discovered yet, and gives further evidence to prove my topic question true. He uses multiple research experiments performed by outside sources as further evidence to the topic, and ends the essay with a very good argument in my favor.

This is a PDF file of a Swedish team of Neuro surgeons and Nueropathologists' findings during an extended research program dedicated to learning the results of cellphone radiation exposure on a rat's brain. If you take the time to examine the results of this study, you might find that the results are quite surprising, maybe even enough to make you hesitate next time to take a phone call. I believe this to be the strongest piece of information that i have discover so far.

what I want to know about the dangers of cell phones
I hope to learn more about the exact science behind the way cell phones affect us. They affect us in physical and social ways, both of which aren't exactly common knowledge. Most people wouldn't be able to tell you the exact reason why the cell phones give off their radiation. Similarly, even fewer people can tell you why the way we use cell phones makes us lose our social skills. A specialist can most likely provide information on both topics, but I do no personally know any radiologists. As a result, I must use written documents and research as my primary resources. I may be able to contact an expert and ask him questions via email, or a medical website could give me certain information on the health hazards of the amount of radiation given off by the more common cell phones.

What I already know about the dangers of cell phones
Cell phones are very rarely used for their primary purpose, that is, as a telephone. A majority of people who use cell phones are using them primarily for texting. Now, telephone calls have some amount of interaction involved, so not all experience is lost. However, when people text, which involves little to no effort whatsoever, they are helping to weaken their social skills. By using text as a medium of communication, a person sacrifices their verbal communication skills, which can lead to plenty of bad consequences upon the return of verbal contact. A person could have gotten used to the informal manner of texting, and might come off as rude, or curt, or overly casual in a scenario where that can make a big difference. Also, it would be very easy for a person who had misplaced their cell phone have their phone be found by a stranger, who might then begin to text random people, posing as your friend, and are trying to sneak their way into your lives. The scariest part is that you might never realize it because it's a lot easier to determine a voice than a way of texting. Also, all messages are saved to your phone unless you actively go into your messages and delete each individual text, making it easy for people to see what you are saying to your friends. However, a vocal conversation cannot be recored, unless under very rare circumstances. So do you know who you're talking to?
The story behind our cell phones' dangers.
Telephones have come a long way in society, and I will admit that they play a major role in daily life. However, Cell phones have been the source of many problems and issues in society. One example of many would be that most, if not all phones release radiation as a result of its ‘signal,’ cell phone service towers also release a more copious level of radiation, but both are extremely dangerous if you are constantly around them and using them. Since our generation is the first to use these more radioactive phones for an extended period of time, we have no existing example to rule by to see the results of this amount of radiation. The EPA has stated that cell phones must have a maximum of 1.65 watts per kilogram in cell phones to avoid noticeable cell damage, and there are phones today that push that level at rates of around 1.63, an example of which is the Motorola v195. see Cell phones and radiation and hopefully yours isn't on the list!
